Wasting More Tax Money on Useless Space Exploration

In any effort to capture the public's imagination so that they are sympathetic to wasting billions upon billions of dollars - Japanese yen - for continued space research, the folks at NASA and NASDA (Japan's own version of NASA) are always trying to do something to make space travel exciting and fun and not, I repeat not, a cover for sending rockets and satellites into space for military purposes.

It doesn't matter that we are taxed out to the limit or debt at over 200% of GDP, space exploration is exciting and fun so we must do it. It is not a waste of money like other things the government wastes money on. This one is different. Really.

That some dead-enders and party-poopers would claim that those Communications Satellites we keep sending up have military uses and can - and are - used for spying. We deny that completely.

Ah! Space travel. I remember the heady days when I was a kid and it was rumored that the USA spent several million dollars developing a ball point pen while the Russians used a pencil... The story is not exactly true but it illustrates what might be going on behind the scenes...

We do know that, for example, Japan spent $78 billion dollars on 212 some environmental programs in 2010 concerning Global Warming that were all miserable failures.

Now, we find out that Japan is going to send up a robot that can use Twitter....

Techeye.net reports:

A report said that Japan will launch a robot resembling a human being that can is so like a human that it will even use Twitter.

According to the report, on nikkei.com, the robot is the result of a collaboration between the University of Tokyo, Dentsu and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency.

This robot is some clever robot, because the report suggests that it will be kitted out with a camera and look closely at the faces of human beings to see if they’re getting stressed out. It will then, presumably, tweet this information down to this planet. (emphasis mine).

It is all a little bit 2001ish but it’s going to be with us soon, because nikkei.com says that a prototype will be on the next space shuttle later this month.

The article ends with a humorous question that I like but think doesn't go to the logical conclusion:

There’s a case, isn’t there, for not bothering to send humans into space at all, just robots and caseloads of defunct mobile phones.

The ending should say, "There's a case, isn't there, for not bothering to do any of this at all as it is just another huge waste of taxpayer monies that we don't have. For one, the government can't even repair potholes in the streets on time and within budget. What's makes anyone think the space program is not a huge waste of money? And, two; if space exploration were profitable and useful then private industry could and would do a much better job and it wouldn't put the burden on taxpayers."

"Danger! Danger! Dr. Smith has gone mad!
Must Tweet! Must Tweet!"

Some people will argue that "Someday space exploration will yield great results and be very profitable. Oh really? Where is the evidence for that kind of thinking? Supposedly we've been doing this, at least in America, for over 40 years and we've lost hundreds of billions of dollars.

Just when is this going to be profitable?

Also, we don't even understand our own planet; we have more than 1/2 the planet starving; we have problems of pollution; wars; running out of energy; etc. etc.... I'm not saying that the government should do something about those problems. No! I think the government should just get out of the way.

But if someone wants to take the argument that we need to explore space for the "benefit of mankind" then I will counter that there are many more efficient ways to achieve such ends closer to home.

Or are photos of comets that pass by the earth all that important to our daily life?

Anyhow, ploys like sending this stupid robot up in space "that can use Twitter" (as if important messages about astronauts help would be left to an Internet service that is often down and certainly not private) or picking a Japanese to be captain of the International Space Station are all media tricks to pull at people's emotions and get those people to approve of this waste of money and to support it...

Seriously, if they want to capture the imagination of people for space travel, we'd best leave it to private organizations and hope that someone makes more movies like Star Wars or TV shows like Lost in Space or Star Trek.

The government-run space program should be killed immediately.

Twitter is Like a Spam Sandwich! No One Actually Reads Twitter

Here I go again, railing on Twitter. Twitter is like a Spam sandwich; no likes to eat Spam and no one likes to read Twitter.

Last week I complained that Twitter has turned into a cesspool of people Twittering about sales crap.

Way too many people are posting (in a dishonest and sneaky way) about something that  takes you to a site that asks that you sign up or buy something.

The most absurd (and by far the most irritating) are the ones that say, "Get 1000's of new Twitter followers." Then when you look at that person's Twitter profile, you see that they only have two-hundred followers or so.

How can they say, "I got 1000's of new followers" etc., etc., blah, blah... When they only have a few hundred? At the link, it tells you that it costs, for example, $500 dollars for 200 "new friends." I thought only rock stars and people like that had paid friends (read: entourage). Why in the world would anyone want to pay for "friends"? What good is it to follow someone who you have zero interest in excepting to add a "1" to the numbers of followers you have?

If I have lots of followers, does that make me popular?

In the past, I've complained - and showed proof - that 60% of all Twitters users quit in the first month (uh, that means that way more of your current followers to your Twitter account have not opened their Twitter account in over 30 days - this also means that Twitter has retained only 10% of all followers after one year).

I've proven that Twitter manipulates their trending numbers

I've also proven that Twitter is dishonest about when their service is down.

I also really don't like how many people today are using Twitter - in a dishonest manner - to try to find business and sales leads. I've written before that using Twitter or Linkedin for sales is fine, but you have to be upfront and honest about what you want... Tricking people to click a link is a stupid way to do business.

Today, I want to show you that many people agree with me and show you that actual readership of Twitter is seriously down and could be crashing right before our very eyes due to the fact that Twitter is just full of people hawking crap like "Get 1000's of followers on Twitter" or "Make $1000s of dollars off of Twitter sitting at home" etc., etc.

This guy has a good example on his blog at Blogation:

Twitter is the ideal medium for spammers. They set up scripts to follow as many people as possible and then hope that those people are using an “auto-follow” program and will then follow them. I’m one of those suckers that auto-follows – when I started using Twitter, it seemed to be the thing to do. After about one week of auto-following, I was getting several hundred messages a day that could just have easily ended up in my email spam folder. To prove this point, I just logged on to my “TweetDeck” and looked at the last ten tweets I received. Here are some of the samples:

The above is pretty self-explanatory. Twitter is fast becoming like the back pages of the Marvel comics I read when I was a kid. I am expecting, any day, the Charles Atlas Tweets telling me how I can become a beef-cake in just 7 days....

I have also written extensively that you have to give away good, useful and free information on the Internet if you want to get followers and a strong readership base. I also showed why a blog beats out Twitter any day of the week.

Like many others, I want to use my blog to give away free useful information. I have told people how to get free airlines tickets, free pizzas and food, all sorts of things. In a few weeks, I'll be the first in Japan to tell you how to get free vacations to Malaysia.

I use Twitter to drive readers to my blog.

You know what? Even though the numbers of readers to my blog is skyrocketing, the numbers of people coming from Twitter to my blog is rapidly declining. Why? I strongly suspect that it is, as one astute reader wrote in;

Twitter is my least favorite of all the social networking stuff. I have it connected to my Facebook so I just use it as a one-stop way to post any updates to my blog or to link to new stuff I write. I never "network" with Twitter either. It's a one-way form of communication for me. Honestly, I've never known an influential or important colleague to EVER read Twitter. Some of them POST on twitter, but none of them read it.

I think he's absolutely right. The influential people I know (the few) do not read Twitter. They use it to sell services or goods.

Businesses take note: Notice the huge disparity of visitors from Google compared to Twitter.
This shows a massive difference in the quality of visitor. Google visitors had to search for me.
On the other hand, I had to search for Twitter visitors.

Twitter is it's own worst enemy. People say, "Get thousands of followers!" or, "I'll follow you, you follow me!" But, let's be honest with each other, do you read Twitter? I don't.

Think about this; people will surf the Internet or Facebook, but no one surfs Twitter. Whenever I Tweet something, if there is not a message right there at the top (amongst the 1000's and 1000's I have received in the last 12 hours), I certainly am not going to go back and see what others have written.

It is a waste of time to do so.... Especially when all they ever want me to do is to get 1000's more followers. .... Why would I want 1000's more followers who - all they want to do - is sell me something and they don't read Twitter either....

The excitement about Twitter reminds me of the early days of Amway. Everyone was excited and everyone was doing it; a few years later, reality set in and, well, do you know anyone who does Amway anymore? I don't.

Do you know anyone who reads Twitter? I don't.

Come to think of it... Who does read Twitter?

Reader comments welcomed.

Pet Peeves About Linkedin and Twitter

What some people do on both Linkedin and Twitter sometimes greatly irritate me. I wonder if they irritate a lot of other people too.

Before I complain about Linkedin, let me complain about Twitter. I've complained before about Twitter here (60% of all Twitter users quit using Twitter within the first 30 days), here (about Twitter manipulating the "Trending" numbers) and here. Now, the most recent thing that irritates me about Twitter is all the junk mail and hard sell pitches; or should I call them "Hard Sell Tweets"?

I got 1,000s of followers!

If I have lots of followers, does that make me popular?

Anyway, that's a dishonest sales tactic, no?

That takes me to my next target; Linkedin. And speaking about dishonest sales tactics; twice in the last 3 weeks, I have been asked by someone to allow them into my network (or whatever it is called) only to have them soon reveal their true purpose: They aren't interested in connecting; they are interested in selling me something.

One girl wants to write a book on Japan and asked me to help out. At first I was flattered, then I realized that she didn't even bother to find out who I was and what I have done here in this country. All she wanted was somebody - anybody - to write something about Japan. What a load of BS.

I kind of felt like the last girl at the bar who gets taken home by a drunk guy who gets her in bed and the next morning wonders how she got into his apartment...

Please excuse my childish vanity here while I blow off steam... There are very few foreigners in Japan who have been here longer than I have. I only know of two. One guy is named Roger Marshall and the other guy is Bruce Jackson. Both gentlemen are the most upstanding - and outstanding - guys you could ever want to meet. I've been here since 1984 (the first time was 1979). Both these guys have been here since the 1970's! Plus, they are true Japanophiles: They speaks the language and understand - as best as any of us can - what the hell is going on here.

I think that a guy like Roger or Bruce, if I wanted to approach them for sales, at least deserves enough respect from me that I do my due diligence and find out all I can about them before I bother them. Maybe I am conceited, but I hope some young sales person would offer me the same consideration.

Hell, it doesn't have to be Japan, either. Most good salesmen would do their homework before pitching...

So, I wasn't happy when I realized that this dumb girl hadn't even bothered to find out who I was before she asked for my help.

The next guy was from an investment company. He claimed that he wanted to connect... Then, within an hour, he was trying to sell me a sales meeting.

Once again, I gathered that he had no idea who I was or what I have done here in this country. He also claimed that "It would only take 20 minutes of my time to show me how I could make more money from my investments"!? Oh really? I'm over 53 years old and someone can come into my office, shake my hand, sit down and yak for a minute and tell me everything I need to know about taxes and investments? Wow! That's amazing. I wonder why people bother to go to university for 4 years or bother getting a license to become a financial advisor?

Of course, I told this guy, "No!"

The next time I want to go and feel abused by a salesman I'll go back to the USA and look at used cars, thank you.

I have a good piece of advice for any sales person; before you bother to even make a sales pitch, at least take 10 minutes to try to find out some background information on the people or company that you are approaching.

If I wanted to have people approaching me for sales like this (like Amway did in the early 1980's) then I would have joined the Mormon church.

One more event like this and I will "un-friend" a lot of people or cancel my Twitter or Linkedin account. Actually, I don't need either. If someone really wanted to get a hold of me, they could.

Just Google; "Mike" and "Tokyo" and there I am.

Is it just me or are there others who feel the same way; why have Twitter and Linkedin become so much like a dumpy singles bar?
